Kon Sew Ling - Our Resilient Hustler
Mdm Kon always believed in the value of working hard. From clerical work to a part-time stint in McDonald's, to eventually a funeral procession's percussion player, Mdm Kon has demonstrated her adaptability and openness to a wide variety of good, honest work. Even after being diagnosed with dementia and thereafter residing in Apex's Gerbera Home, she continued to verbalise her desire to work.
Despite her request, she was unwilling to leave her Home, Gerbera, initially, as she was uneasy with environments and Persons that she was not familiar with. Due to this, she didn’t participate in work activities, activities that were meaningful to her.
Motivated to empower her to utilise her capable hands and mind through participating in community activities, our care staff initiated strategies to create a safe emotional environment for her, beginning with in-Lodge activities, and slowly, but surely encouraging her to venture outside.
Today, beyond her usual work activities, Mdm Kon is enthused to help out in various household chores, occasionally giving pointers to fellow residents when they face issues during activities. She continues to live a normalised and meaningful life, with a good balance of work and leisure in the form of Morning Venture* and HortPark explorations.
*Morning Venture is a Fun and Fit initiative aimed at building fitness in a normalised way, where residents get to enjoy hawker food at various public areas (e.g. Pasir Ris Park, White Sands Mall) after a long walk
Persons with dementia, engaged meaningfully through strength-based approaches in a nurturing environment, can continue to live well with meaning and purpose.
Your generous donation will go into helping us enable and empowering Persons with Dementia such as Mdm Kon, one of the 210 residents staying at our Lodge, to continue a life with meaning and purpose.
