Ngm Su - Our Resident Explorer
Mr Ngm was always an outgoing and adventurous individual, which was why he particularly enjoyed his previous career as a welder on a ship. Even after he left that job, he continued his hobby of exploring, collecting items from the community which he'd try to repair at home.
Since being diagnosed with dementia in 2016, he had rarely gotten the chance to explore his surroundings, due to concerns from caregivers of him getting lost. That's why, when he came to Apex Harmony Lodge in 2018, his curiosity of the environment led to him deciding to explore the neighbourhood on his own.
After understanding from him about his desire to explore the neighbourhood, our care team initiated a plan to empower him to take part in many of AHL's in-community programmes. Through a well-rounded plan that addressed both his physical fitness and emotional stability, he now looks forward to multiple in-community activities every week, from horticulture therapy in Hort Park to Hawker Delights* at Jewel @ Changi.
With his exploratory needs satisfied, Mr Ngm has since been enthused to take part in multiple other activities and even help out the staff and other residents with chores, along with his friends in the Home.
*Hawker Delights is an initiative aimed at normalising residents' lives by empowering them to purchase hawker food for their fellow residents in trips to various malls and food centres
