Niam Boon Heng - Our Talented Musician
A motivated learner, Mr Niam always found meaning in picking up new skills on his own. Without formal courses or lessons, he learnt how to play the harmonica, accordion, piano, and even learnt English with only a dictionary as his teacher. In his pursuit of musical interests, Mr Niam spent his free time composing new songs and participating in stage performances in his old neighbourhood.
However, that changed after he was diagnosed with dementia. Without the right support, there was no longer any motivation to continue his musical pursuits, and it was assumed that he'd lost those skills that he picked up previously.
That's why, when we handed him a harmonica, as part of our efforts to engage residents through music, it was a pleasant surprise when he started playing the harmonica with all the familiarity of a seasoned musician. At the end of the session, he even commented that the harmonica wasn't of good quality.
Today, as a resident of Blue Star Home, one of our four Supported Living Homes in Apex Harmony Lodge, where the residents are enabled and engaged to live well through the benefits of music, Mr Niam continues to be engaged in both group and individual musical activities, exercising his remaining abilities to live life meaningfully.
Persons with dementia, engaged meaningfully through strength-based approaches in a nurturing environment, can continue to live well with meaning and purpose.
Your generous donation will go into helping us enable and empowering Persons with Dementia such as Mr Niam, one of the 210 residents staying at our Lodge, to continue a life with meaning and purpose.
