OUR PHILOSOPHY

To care well is to see the person, not the condition — and to walk beside them with unwavering dignity through every season of life

Every person living with dementia has a story worth knowing — and a life worth living well. At the Lodge, we practice person-centred care, design personalised Living Well Plans, and journey with your loved ones through each stage of dementia

Person Centered Care

Person-centred care means we begin with the person — not the diagnosis. Every person living with dementia is a unique individual, shaped by a lifetime of experiences, relationships, strengths, preferences, and aspirations.

At the Lodge, we want to know what your loved one loves, what unsettles them, and what brings them comfort — because their identity does not disappear with cognition. It finds new expression.

Central to this is an ability-centred outlook: we focus on what your loved one can still do, feel, and enjoy, rather than on what dementia has taken away. Preserved abilities — however quiet or small — are the foundation from which we build meaningful daily life.

We meet your loved one where they are — honouring who they have always been, and building on what they can still do, feel, and enjoy.

Dementia changes what a person can do. It does not change who they are. Our approach is person centred and ability-focused — we look for what remains, build on it, and celebrate it

Living Well Plan

Every resident at the Lodge has a Living Well Plan — a personalised record that captures who they are, not just what they need. It brings together their health history, personal story, emotional well-being, and abilities; sets meaningful goals; and outlines practical ways to support them in living well.

For your loved one, this means care that is shaped around what matters to them — including specific activities and forms of engagement that support their well-being and sense of purpose. Their plan is kept current, reflecting changes in needs, responses, and interests over time.

This is how our philosophy becomes practice: a living plan, centred always on the person. It also provides continuity across their care journey — from pre-admission through daily life at the Lodge, and as needs evolve over time.

Wellbeing is not the absence of dementia. It is the presence of moments that matter

Care Journey

Every person's journey with dementia is different — and it changes over time.

Care at the Lodge begins even before admission, with a thoughtful assessment to understand your loved one's needs, preferences, and circumstances. From their first day, we focus on helping them feel safe, welcomed, and gradually at home.

As they settle in, their Living Well Plan guides how we support them — shaping daily routines, relationships, and meaningful engagement in ways that are familiar and reassuring. Over time, their care deepens with them, evolving in rhythm and relationship as their needs change.

When needs become more complex, including at the end of life, care remains centred on comfort, dignity, and what matters most to them.

At every stage, their journey is held with continuity, respect, and care.

For residents in the later stages of dementia, we practise Namaste Care — an internationally recognised programme developed by Joyce Simard — which centres on comfort, sensory experience, and the belief that connection remains possible at every stage of life
