RESIDENT STORIES

Dementia changes many things—but never the person. These are stories of life at Apex Harmony Lodge: moments of joy, connection, and quiet courage, shared with the permission and pride of the families who entrusted them to us.

Mdm Ong actively participates in a wide range of activities, including Music & Movement, Nostalgic Sips, karaoke, Zumba, art, and even simple tasks such as folding clothes. Each activity offers a way for her to remain engaged, connected, and grounded in who she is. One of the most heartening aspects of her journey has been her rediscovery of performing.

Having danced in her earlier years, Mdm Ong has since returned to the stage—performing at the Esplanade for Sing Out Loud!, taking part in intergenerational bonding programmes, and joining our 25th Anniversary celebrations. Though she describes herself as shy, she carries herself with quiet confidence and grace each time she steps forward.

Beyond her performances, Mdm Ong is someone others naturally gravitate towards. She moves with ease around the Lodge, spending time with fellow residents, offering a listening ear, and sharing simple massage techniques to ease their aches and discomfort. During a temple lunch outing in 2025, she returned with a bright smile—a small but meaningful moment reflecting her joy in being part of the community.

In many ways, Mdm Ong reflects what we hope for every resident: a life that remains full, connected, and deeply meaningful.

Mr Sathiya is an observant gentleman who has settled into a steady rhythm at Apex Harmony Lodge. Often seen with a gentle smile, he finds comfort in familiar routines and programmes that support his cognitive and social well-being.

During Music & Movement sessions, he is focused. The flow of the music brings a visible spark of joy to his eyes, and he participates in his own way, alongside fellow residents. These shared moments create opportunities for connection and a sense of belonging within the home.

In quieter moments, Mr Sathiya spends time in the garden, where the sensory environment helps anchor him in the present. Feeling the warmth of the sun or listening to the rustle of leaves forms part of a calm and familiar routine that he returns to each day.

His presence is gentle but steady, and over time, he has become a familiar and reassuring part of the community around him.

When Mdm Ong first arrived, she appeared withdrawn and low in mood. She spent long periods resting in bed, with little engagement in the activities or interactions around her. Staff noticed a distant gaze and minimal conversation—signs of disconnection that shaped her early days with us.

The team took time to get to know Mdm Ong — her preferences, routines, and what brought comfort. Familiar experiences such as music, creative activities, and gentle Namaste Care sessions were introduced at her own pace. Gradually, these moments created space for comfort and engagement to emerge.

A turning point came through the intergenerational bonding programme. At first, Mdm Ong sat quietly, observing from a distance. Then, small changes became noticeable—a smile, then laughter, and eventually spontaneous interaction. She began engaging with the students, sharing stories and enjoying music together. The children’s presence seemed to draw her out, bringing moments of recognition, warmth, and connection.

Today, her days reflect a quieter but meaningful rhythm, shaped by familiar interactions and moments of connection that continue to unfold.
